Graceful Evergreen Deer – Hot Foil Christmas and Winter Card

Graceful Evergreen Deer card with copper hot foilingI made two versions of this woodland card, using the Graceful Evergreen Deer Bundle during a recent Facebook and YouTube Live, one with copper foil and one with gold. I love how the metallic accents work with the soft colours to create an elegant winter scene.

You can watch the Live here, and you’ll find all the supplies listed at the end of this post.

A Closer Look at Graceful Evergreen Deer

I love a stamp set that includes all the little elements you need to build a scene, and the Graceful Evergreen Deer stamp set has plenty of them!

Along with two different sizes of trees, there are stamps for adding snow, texture and the ground beneath the trees.

They’re easy to overlook, but those little stamps help bring the whole scene together.

And when you add the coordinating hot foil dies from the bundle to create that beautiful metallic deer … WOW!

Creating a Soft Woodland Scene

One of my favourite techniques for creating a scene like this is second-generation stamping. Simply ink your stamp, stamp it once on scrap paper, and then stamp it onto your project without reinking.

This gives you a lighter impression of the same colour, which is perfect for adding depth to a woodland scene. You can create the look of trees in the distance without needing another ink colour.

Another little detail I love is adding shimmer to the trees with the Peaceful Pine Shimmer Brush.

Rather than colouring the entire tree, add a little shimmer to selected branches. This gives the trees a subtle sparkle without covering up the stamped details.

It’s one of those finishing touches that can be difficult to capture in a photograph, but looks so pretty when the light catches it!

Copper or Gold? Two Different Looks

For these cards, I experimented with both the foil colour and the cardstock used for the deer.

For the copper version, I used White Willow cardstock. It has a smoother surface, which gave me a lovely, smooth copper foil finish.

For the gold version, I used Early Espresso cardstock. I really like the contrast of the dark deer against the softer background, although the foiling isn’t quite as smooth.

But you know what? I think the slightly uneven finish adds a little rustic charm to the deer!

If you prefer a smoother metallic finish, the cardstock you choose can make a difference. It’s something worth experimenting with when you’re hot foiling.

A Soft Winter Colour Combination

I really like how these colours work together. They’re soft and pretty without being overly Christmas-specific.

Soft winter and Christmas card colour combination

This combination would work just as well for a winter birthday card as it does for a Christmas card.

And although my card doesn’t have a specifically Christmas greeting on the front, you could easily add one inside or change the front greeting to something more festive.

As it is, I think it would also make a lovely winter birthday or thinking-of-you card.

A Little More About Hot Foiling

If you’re new to hot foiling, it’s a technique that uses heat and pressure to transfer metallic foil onto cardstock. It gives your projects a beautiful metallic finish.

Stampin’ Up! has a Hot Foil System, and until January 2027, the system also includes a craft class to help you get started.

Stampin' Hot Foil System and Craft Class

You can learn more about the Stampin’ Hot Foil System here.

You’ll also need a compatible die-cutting machine to apply the pressure needed for hot foiling and to cut out your shapes. The machine needs a platform at least 6¼” wide, and the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine works with the system.
