When I sat down to experiment with the new Stampin’ Hot Foil System and the Butterfly Flight Bundle, I planned to make one elegant butterfly card. By the time I finished, I had created three different cards—simply by looking at the leftover butterflies a little differently.

Today I’ll show you how one foiled sheet inspired three elegant butterfly cards using Silver and Light Pink Hot Foil, decorative masks, and one beautiful colour palette.

Why I Love the Butterfly Flight Bundle

The Butterfly Flight Bundle is much more than a set of beautiful butterfly dies.

The coordinating Butterfly Flight Decorative Masks make it quick and easy to add colour while still giving the butterflies beautiful depth and shading. Instead of colouring every detail by hand, you can position each mask over the image and blend on your ink colours one layer at a time.

In just a few minutes, your butterflies look beautifully detailed—and adding the metallic hot foil outlines makes them even more striking.

I also love that one foiled sheet gives you several butterflies at once. You can use one as the focal point of a card and still have more ready for another project.

Elegant Silver Butterfly Card

This first card lets the foiled butterfly become the star of the design.

Rather than adding lots of complicated layers, I paired the butterfly with an embossed Basic White background, a soft Fresh Freesia ribbon, and a simple hot foiled greeting. The metallic shine does most of the work!

The silver foil catches the light beautifully while the purple shades keep the card soft and elegant.

Stretch Your Supplies with Leftover Butterflies

Here’s the card I hadn’t originally planned to make.

After completing the first project, I still had several silver foiled butterflies sitting on my craft table. Instead of putting them away for another time, I challenged myself to use them immediately.

A few narrow strips of Night of Navy cardstock completely changed the look of the butterflies and gave me the foundation for a second card. I added three of the butterflies, a hot foiled greeting, and a few small embellishments to finish the design.

I love projects like this because they show that leftover die cuts aren’t really leftovers at all—they may be the beginning of your next card!

Sometimes the unplanned card becomes one of my favourites.

A Soft Purple and Navy Colour Combination

The two silver butterfly cards use the same colour palette:

• Fresh Freesia
• Highland Heather
• Night of Navy
• Silver Stampin’ Hot Foil

The soft purples coordinate beautifully with the cool silver foil, while the Night of Navy adds enough contrast to make the butterflies stand out.

Using the same colours on both projects also made it easy to turn the extra butterflies into a coordinated second card without pulling out an entirely new collection of supplies.

Try Light Pink Hot Foil on Night of Navy

After the live video ended, I couldn’t resist trying one more experiment.

I swapped the Silver Hot Foil for Light Pink Stampin’ Hot Foil and placed the butterflies against Night of Navy cardstock.

Wow!

The pink foil almost glows against the dark cardstock and gives the butterflies a completely different personality. The silver version feels soft and elegant, while the pink and navy combination feels richer and a little more dramatic.

For this card, I also switched the greeting and used the Banner Sayings Stamp Set. Mixing products from different collections is an easy way to give the same focal images a fresh look.

Light Pink Hot Foil on Night of Navy may be one of my new favourite combinations!

Jenn’s Hot Foil Cardmaking Tips

• Let the foil help choose your colours. Silver worked beautifully with these cool purples, while the Light Pink Hot Foil became much more dramatic when paired with Night of Navy.
• Use your extra foiled images right away. Before putting your supplies away, look at what remains on your craft table and see whether it could become another card.
• Give the foil room to shine. A simple layout and plenty of open space help the metallic details remain the focus.
• Use embossing for quiet texture. An embossed background adds interest without competing with a detailed hot foiled image.
• Experiment with coloured foil. Gold and silver are classic choices, but coloured foil can look spectacular—especially against darker cardstock.
